I was becoming as crazy as The Deserter by the amount of texts analyzing the ending as if it was/should be a simple chain of events, when the whole game was always about a world and its unfolding. History is always watching us and, if not made peace with, it will come and bite our asses. Or kill a merc. There is the phasmid, there is the possible jealousy, there is the political background... but they are only details that set in motion the latent power of unresolved History.
Now, of course this sounds like historical materialism. But when the creators themselves thanked Marx and Engels during their acceptance speech in The Game Awards, I guess it is even more fitting than the threads people are looking for at the surface...
